Happy Roe v. Wade Day! Here is my entry for Blog for Choice 2008
Topic: Special Days

[Cross-posted from my Google blog, Aiken Area Progressive]

Today, I am here to honour the 35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Here is why I am pro-choice and vote pro-choice, and have been pro-choice since January 31, 2003:

I am pro-choice and I vote pro-choice because I CARE ABOUT WOMEN. In case if you don't know, my best friend is a woman.

I am pro-choice and I vote pro-choice because
I WANT THE ATROCIOUS HYDE AMENDMENT TO BE ABOLISHED.

I am pro-choice and I vote pro-choice because ANTI-CHOICE LAWS HAVE KILLED MORE THAN 261 MILLION WOMEN DURING PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH SINCE JULY 4, 1776.

I am pro-choice and I vote pro-choice because I DON'T WANT WOMEN TO DIE DURING PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH.

I am pro-choice and I vote pro-choice because I WANT THE GLOBAL GAG RULE TO BE REPEALED AND CONGRESS TO PERMANENTLY BAN THE GLOBAL GAG RULE FROM EVER BEING REINSTATED.

And most telling of the reason why I am pro-choice and I vote pro-choice is because I TRUST WOMEN TO MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR OWN BODIES, I WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO STAY OUT OF WOMEN'S LIVES AND I WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO STAY OUT OF THE MEDICAL ROOMS.

Ok, readers -- it is your turn. Why are you pro-choice and why do you vote pro-choice?

Graniteville, three years later
Topic: News

GRANITEVILLE -- It is a day that changed me personally and Graniteville directly.

January 6, 2005.

2:33 a.m.

The exact time in which two trains collided when one of the trains wasn't even moving.  People in that town said they heard a loud BOOM as if something had exploded.

When I woke up at 6 a.m., I was stunned at what I saw.  USC Aiken was now a makeshift ER.

At 7 a.m., then I knew it was something far worse.

That is when I knew that lives 28 miles apart was going to be altered forever.  The 5,400 people in Graniteville had to levae their homes.  And for me and my best friend, we knew that this horrible event was going to be forever linked with her birthday.

By the time noon had gotten here, we got word of casualties.

At 8 p.m., that figure stood at eight people dead.

By 2007, the number stood at 11 people dead. Ten Americans and one Canadian.

And what has happened in Columbia?  Business as usual.

Our incompetent state government still as incompetent as ever for the past five years.  They have offered only meager help to the people in Graniteville.  And it is a disgrace.  And the State of South Carolina should hang their heads in shame.

And when you look at what our officials in Columbia has been doing to help us out, it is easy to see why the residents of Graniteville or Aiken County don't want to talk about the incident.

This is also one more reason as to why we need to change the faces of our do-nothing state government.

Today, let's remember the people of Graniteville, even if our state government doesn't.

Woman arrested for indecent exposure at NBA game
Topic: News

MEMPHIS -- A 35-year-old woman was arrested for showing her breasts at FedEx Forum.  Stephanie Simpson was arrested for indecent exposure at the game.

Incidents like this in a very large stadium shouldn't be defended by feminists as liberation unless they plan to join the fight to overturn all public indecency laws.  Keep in mind, a man would have been arrested much more quickly if he was to show his penis at a sports game, such as the situation seven years ago when someone showed his penis to former Atlanta pitcher John Rocker at Dodgers Stadium.

Hopefully, she will know that there are a time and a place for everything as long as we have these so-called 'morality' laws.

Review: Live in Boston 1970 by The Doors
Topic: Music

NEW YORK CITY -- Live in Boston 1970 is the live album by the Doors.  They performed for the last time before Jim Morrison's untimely death the following year in the Massachusetts capital city.

It may not sound like your typical Doors, but according to music experts, it is better sounding than most of the other Doors bootlegs and live albums.  As for the songs, there is a 17-minute "Light My Fire" medley on the second disc that is really intriguing.  Other than that, there is not much else that is of note, except for the speeches -- nearly all of which is under 30 seconds.  Also, of note, Mr. Morrison turns down an offer to strip naked.

But, in this box, are raw material that made the Doors who they are.  I would recommend this album to your collection, even if it isn't up to the task like Live In Philadelphia or Absolutely Live.

Final Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

The Dictator-in-Chief talks about 2008 presidential race
Topic: News

[Cross-posted from my Google blog, Aiken Area Progressive]

WASHINGTON -- George Bush, the never-elected dictator of this nation, now talked about what qualities the next president should have in 2008. He mentioned that the next president must have knowledge of the world's problems. Well, guess what? Bush don't even know about the world's problems, and it is pretty evident he don't know jack because he has put our very honourable servicepeople in his own personal slaughterhouse that is Iraq.

What Bush really wants is another dictator in the White House, just like him. And each of the Republicans that are running for president (including the recently dropped-out Tom Tancredo as of 2 p.m.) are also all dictators.

So, if our democracy is to be saved, the Democrats are the only correct choice. And until we have a very pro-choice, very pro-gay, very pro-ERA independent running for the White House, the Democrats will continue to be the only correct choice for public office.

As for Bush, he is the worst current dictator far and away, even worse than Time magazine's Person of the Year, Vladimir Putin and Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega.

Progressive Pop Singers elected to Rock Hall
Topic: Music

CLEVELAND -- At long last, the Big Three from the 1980s will be reunited.

Only this time, it is forever.

Madonna Louise Ciccone is the last of the Big Three from the 1980s to be inducted from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (Michael Jackson was inducted in 2001 and Prince was inducted in 2004).  She is a Democrat, vociferous pro-choice activist, and an ardent supporter of LGBT marraige.  She is also a supporter of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and has offered to perform for the New York Senator to stunt any boost that Sen. Barack Obama may have had from Oprah Winfrey's appearances in Des Moines, Iowa; Manchester, N.H.; and Columbia.

Madonna is known for her hits "Borderline", "Holiday", "Like a Virgin"; "Dress You Up", "Get Into the Groove", "Cherish", "Erotica", "Human Nature", "Ray of Light", "Beautiful Stranger" and "Music".

Another politically progressive musician, John Mellencamp, is also getting in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame after five tries.  Mellencamp is most known for his hits "Jack & Diane", "Hurts So Good", "Crumblin' Down" and "Scarecrow".  He is also widely noted for his song "To Washington", a 2003 song that criticizes Bush's illegal murder-for-oil.

Other Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees include the Dave Clark Five, the Ventures and Lenoard Cohen.

To be eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, it must have been 25 years since the artist(s)'s release of his/her debut single or album.

Bonds get bond
Topic: Sports

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds had his day in court today.  And not surprisingly, he pled innocent to all five charges against him.

Oakland, by the way, now have interest in Mr. Bonds. And he doesn't have to show up on February 7, 2008 either.

Bonds is charged with four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice.  Bond for him was set at one-half million dollars.

If convicted, Bonds could face three decades in prison.

16-0 far more likely than 0-16.
Topic: Sports

Over the weekend, there was great debate about whether there would be a 16-0 team or and 0-16 team.

Let me set it straight for all of those Aiken Standard pundits.

There will be no 0-16 team this year.

Why?

Because Miami will win against either Cincinnati or an NFC team before the season is out.  Saint Louis will also win.  So, therefore, we can immediately rule out any possibility of an 0-16 team.

So, that means 16-0 looks far more likely to happen.  The New England Patriots have cleared the hurdle that was the Indianapolis Colts.  The best chance the Patriots have at losing is against Pittsburgh.  If the Steelers don't beat the Pats, then expect New England to go all the way undefeated.  The Giants and Philadelphia Eagles are not even close to being in the Pats' league.

Breathe easy 1976 Tampa Bucs.  Your winless record is very likely to stand for another year.

I've made my choice for November 3
Topic: Sports

On this past Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders asked this simple question: "What would you rather watch, football or us?"

Don't worry ladies -- I'll watch you perform.

The second season finale of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team starts at 8 p.m., with all of the previous shows leading up to the finale of the season.
